Mac not recognizing your Android phone: checklist

Updated October 24, 2026

When you plug an Android phone into a Mac and nothing happens, the cause is almost always one of a few simple things. Work through this list from top to bottom.

The checklist

  1. Choose “File transfer” on the phone. In the USB notification, the default is often “Charging only”, and then the Mac gets no data connection.
  2. Unlock the phone. A locked Android phone hides its files until you unlock it and allow access.
  3. Use a data cable. Many cables, especially ones bundled with chargers, carry power only. Google's own help suggests trying another cable.
  4. Skip hubs and docks. Plug straight into the Mac's port. Some USB-C hubs and monitors drop data connections.
  5. Quit apps that hold the phone. Samsung Smart Switch, Kies, other phone managers, Image Capture, Preview, Google Drive or Dropbox can block other apps from opening the phone.
  6. Restart both devices.
  7. Update the phone. Old USB bugs get fixed in system updates.
  8. Try another Mac app. Finder does not show Android phones in File transfer mode by itself, so you need an app that speaks MTP, such as PhoneFerry.

Still nothing?

Open PhoneFerry's Connection Help. It shows what the Mac sees on the USB port and tells you the next step, for example to change the USB mode or to unlock the phone.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my phone charging but not showing on the Mac?

The phone is in “Charging only” mode or the cable has no data wires. Choose “File transfer” in the USB notification or swap the cable.

Does Finder support Android phones?

Not in File transfer (MTP) mode. Finder shows iPhones and drives, but an Android phone needs an MTP app.

Is USB debugging required?

No. File transfer mode is enough. USB debugging (ADB) is an optional extra route some apps use.
