Scheduling & Taking the Texas Real Estate Exam at Pearson VUE

The complete handbook for 2026 candidates. Learn how to navigate Pearson VUE registration, rescheduling timelines, test-center logistics, and calculator regulations.

Overview of the Pearson VUE Licensing Process

In Texas, the official real estate salesperson exam is administered by **Pearson VUE** on behalf of the **Texas Real Estate Commission (TREC)**. While you complete your 180 hours of qualifying coursework with a school of your choice, your final step to licensing happens at a physical Pearson VUE testing center.

Failing to understand the strict rules and protocols of test day is one of the easiest ways to forfeit your exam fees or face unnecessary stress. Here is everything you need to prepare for.

1. Registration & The Reschedule Policy

You can only register for your Pearson VUE exam after receiving an **eligibility letter** from TREC. Once you have your Candidate ID number, you can register and pay your exam fee ($54 per attempt) through the Pearson VUE portal.

Critical Policy: Pearson VUE Texas Real Estate Exam Reschedule rules

If you need to change your exam date or cancel your appointment, you must notify Pearson VUE **at least 48 hours prior** to your scheduled test time.

If you miss this 48-hour window (for example, attempting to reschedule 24 hours prior due to unreadiness or emergencies), you will **forfeit your entire $54 exam fee** and be forced to wait for your registration state to reset before scheduling a new date.

2. What to Bring to your Texas Real Estate Exam

Security at Pearson VUE centers is extremely tight, mimicking airport and high-security government test centers. Arrive at least **30 minutes early**. If you are late, you will not be admitted and will forfeit your fee.

Required Identification Checklist:

You must present **two (2) forms of signature-bearing identification**. Both must be current (unexpired) and have matching names.

  • Primary ID (Must contain a photo & signature): Government-issued Driver's License, US State ID, Passport, or Military ID.
  • Secondary ID (Must contain a signature): Social Security card, major Credit Card, Debit Card, or an employer/school ID card.
Note on Name Matches: The name on your IDs must match the name on your TREC eligibility letter exactly. If you recently had a name change (e.g. marriage), bring legal certificate papers to avoid admission denial.

3. Pearson VUE Real Estate Calculator Rules

Real estate mathematics (calculating commission splits, property taxes, capitalization rates, loan-to-value ratios, and prorated interest) represents about 10-15% of your exam. You will definitely need a calculator, but you cannot just bring any device.

What Calculators are Allowed?

Pearson VUE enforces strict rules to prevent cheating. Your calculator must meet these requirements:

  • Must be **silent, handheld, solar or battery-operated**
  • Must be a **non-programmable, basic function calculator** (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentage, square root)
  • **PROHIBITED:** Any calculator with typewriter keys (QWERTY), programmable memory, scientific or graphing interfaces (e.g., TI-84), cellular phones, or smartwatches
  • Test center staff will inspect your calculator before you enter. If it has programmable features or a scientific layout, it will be confiscated, and you will have to use the clunky on-screen calculator on the testing computer

How to Practice for the Computer Experience

On test day, you sit in a quiet, monitored computer booth. There are no paper tests, and no help screens are available.

Because Pearson VUE enforces separate timings for the **National Portion** (150 minutes) and the **State Portion** (90 minutes), practicing with dynamic time limits and offline simulations is essential.

Our **Texas Real Estate Exam Coach** provides an exact simulation of this separate timing and grading environment. It runs fully offline on your mobile devices, allowing you to build the muscle memory of managing your pacing under realistic exam constraints.
